Hotel Desertica offers boutique luxury in the heart of San Pedro de Atacama. Discover the beauty of this design-led hotel, where I stayed in July, before you book.

After four days on the road across the Bolivian altiplano and one of the coldest nights of my life, I rolled back into San Pedro de Atacama dusty, hoarse and in need of somewhere calm. Hotel Desertica, a tiny boutique hotel right in town, was exactly that.

Step in from the dusty clamour of Caracoles, the town’s main street, and you leave San Pedro de Atacama behind for a sun-drenched terrace, low adobe buildings and a sleek pool, all set in an old family orchard. With the vast Atacama Desert on your doorstep, it blends natural beauty and refined hospitality in a way that makes its mark.

Very few hotels can stay true to their country’s culture and history while delivering on contemporary style.

It’s quite something to encounter a unique destination and find a beautiful fusion of traditional and modern designs that exude rustic elegance.

Hotel Desertica achieves all of that effortlessly. This small, chic, adults-only property in San Pedro de Atacama is the ideal choice for travellers who want a quiet holiday in a truly special place, with the town’s restaurants a short walk away.

  • Rooms: 12 standalone circular turis, in standard and superior categories
  • Best for: couples and solo travellers who want a boutique stay in town rather than an all-inclusive lodge outside it
  • Price: from around US$315 to US$370 a night for two, with breakfast
  • Where I stayed: a standard turi with a fireplace, for one night in July, straight after a four-day tour across the Bolivian altiplano

The full review

My time at Hotel Desertica was so spectacular I fully believe that this property deserves the top spot on your list of Atacama Desert hotels if you want to stay in town.

Here’s all the information to ensure you plan the perfect trip to this remarkable corner of San Pedro de Atacama.

Location

When you travel to the Atacama Desert, you can rest assured you’re ticking off one of the best places to visit in Chile. So it’s only fitting that you choose the right accommodation for all your Atacama adventures.

Hotel Desertica is in a prime spot at Caracoles 455, on San Pedro de Atacama’s main street. The hotel’s so close to the main plaza and the town’s eateries that you can stroll to dinner, then wander back under the stars.

The whitewashed San Pedro de Atacama church, which dates back to the 17th century, and the small Museo Gustavo Le Paige are a few minutes’ walk away. Within about 15km, you’ll find the Pukará de Quitor fortress (about 3km north), the Piedra del Coyote’s overhanging rock (check its lookout has reopened before you go, as it closed for safety checks in 2026) and Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley).

Getting to the hotel is easiest and quickest when you fly to Calama’s El Loa Airport (CJC) from the capital’s Santiago International Airport (SCL). I paid about £100 for my flight; the bus takes around 23 hours. From Calama, you’ll travel for about an hour and 20 minutes to the property via private transfer or shuttle, which the hotel can arrange at extra cost.

Style

One of the things that sets Hotel Desertica apart is that it’s a refurbished family farmhouse on an old Atacameño orchard, now serving as a boutique hotel in the heart of San Pedro.

I love the hotel’s rustic design. It marries unobtrusive contemporary style with traditional local woven textiles and tapestries that feature stunning pops of colour. It’s a style attempted by so many hotels in the Atacama, but one that few really get to the heart of. Desertica pulls it off.

There’s a clear connection between the hotel’s architectural elements and the local culture. Although simple, the decor is still classy enough to create a magical world within the hotel’s adobe walls.

From the rooms to the shared spaces, there are soft hues, with threads of grey, green, and brown fusing with reds, oranges, and gold. You’ll appreciate the use of raw materials such as native wood, paired with a muted mix of textures and tones.

Desertica commits to being sustainability conscious, working to minimise harmful impacts on the surrounding area, with solar power and refillable toiletries. The hotel does its part to preserve the landscape, which includes buildings on elevated trails to support the site’s vegetation.

With footbridges forming part of the foundations, this preserves the land’s original flood irrigation system and ensures harmony as the structures stand firmly on the soil.

Rooms

When I tell you Hotel Desertica is a boutique hotel, I mean it in every sense of the word. There are only 12 rooms, each built as a circular standalone turi (meaning “house” in Kunza, the language of the Atacameño people).

Each room’s design resembles a hut structure, paying homage to how the pre-Hispanic Atacameño communities built their homes. There are two room types: standard (about 30 square metres) and superior (about 40 square metres), each with a king-size bed or twins, and some rooms have a fireplace. Both offer a tranquil sanctuary to rest and restore every night.

My favourite room highlights include the neat wooden cladding, the bespoke furnishings, and the intricate detailing. The rooms are huge: I stayed in a standard turi, which had a large circular bedroom, its own fireplace and an adjoining bathroom, and after my days on the road in Bolivia, it was exactly what I needed.

You’ll enjoy your cosy bed and large bathroom (with a rainfall shower). The complimentary organic toiletries, selected bath products, dressing gowns, and slippers are a much-appreciated perk.

Here, the little things add that extra touch of luxury, style, and comfort. Crisp Egyptian cotton sheets, blackout curtains and heating for cold desert nights are just some examples of the simple pleasures you’ll relish during your time at the hotel.

Experience

Like trips to many parts of the world, the welcome you receive sets the tone and makes a lasting impression. Desertica’s welcome is warm indeed. The staff are all about personalised service and attention to detail.

Privacy and intimacy are the theme on a small property like this one. Expect to be well looked after, whatever your needs. Every member of the hospitality team is ready and willing to make sure you feel comfortable and well looked after.

Facilities

Desertica has designed three main facilities for your absolute pleasure. The first is the outdoor swimming pool, in which you will spend late afternoons after your time off-site exploring greater San Pedro de Atacama. (Fair warning: the pool isn’t heated and the water is quite chilly; you’ll need to adjust if you’re used to heated pools, especially in the southern winter.)

Next, the outdoor lounge, spacious and well-furnished, is where you’ll spend time sipping sundowners, cosying up around the evening fire pit, and meeting new travel buddies.

Third, Desertica has what it calls “magic corners” around the property. These designated spaces provide spots for private time and romantic dates. However you choose to spend your stolen moments of peace and solitude, there’s a place for you.

The hotel grounds also feature a gorgeous garden, winding pathways, a small library and a sun-kissed terrace, all perfect for relaxation when you’re not out and about in town.

Services

You’ll be able to get all the rejuvenation you need between activities and excursions when you book one (or more) of the hotel’s massage treatments, at extra cost, including massages for couples. Simply arrange your session at the front desk at a time that suits you best.

Tours and activities

There aren’t any in-house guides, but the team is more than willing to set up guided tours and transfers with local companies. If you’d like a package that bundles your stay with transfers and excursions, ask the hotel what it’s currently offering when you book.

The hotel will gladly help you arrange fun-filled activities at nearby attractions. Some of the best things to do in the Atacama Desert are stargazing, sunrise at the El Tatio geysers and sunset tours.

Top tip

If you want an all-inclusive option, check out my review of Nayara Alto Atacama, where I stayed earlier on the same trip, with a private guide for the high lagoons and El Tatio. Desertica is the better choice if you’d rather plan your own days and walk into town for dinner.

Some off-site activities to add to your holiday schedule

  • Book a Valle de la Luna sunset tour (Valle de la Luna tickets are sold online for a set date, so check whether yours is included)
  • Experience a San Pedro de Atacama astronomy tour
  • Enjoy a Baltinache hidden lagoons tour (swimming and floating in the lagoons are no longer allowed, but the scenery is still worth the trip)

Remember, while Atacama Desert stargazing is all the rage, there are many other brilliant experiences. These include flamingo spotting at Laguna Chaxa on the Salar de Atacama salt flats and floating in the salty water of Laguna Piedra, next to Laguna Cejar. A word to the wise: don’t get your face wet.

If you’re heading over to Bolivia, many Salar de Uyuni tours start and end in San Pedro, and Desertica makes a soft landing at the end of one, as it did for me.

Food and drink

The restaurant is great. I had lunch there as soon as I arrived from Bolivia, and it was exactly the fresh, light meal I’d been craving. One of the things that has really changed in the Atacama since my first visit is how easy it is to find fresh, contemporary cooking, and the restaurant here is the perfect example. Each night you stay, you can feast on traditional Chilean classics and contemporary international culinary creations made from fresh seasonal and regional ingredients.

Delight in rich flavours of pomegranate, rica-rica and alfalfa, just a few of the ingredients used to make speciality dishes (vegan and gluten-free options included).

An excellent à la carte breakfast menu, cooked to order and included in your rate? They’ve got it. Herbal infusions, fresh juices, speciality coffees, and a bar with your favourite spirits? Sorted. Local treats and divine desserts that’ll be the sweetest way to end your dining nights? You bet.

Practical tips: Hotel Desertica review

Don’t you just love a smooth journey with little fussing, zero travel fumbles, and more fun overall? Me too. These practical tips will help you put together a solid travel plan.

When is the best time to visit San Pedro de Atacama?

A few things will affect the timing of your trip, including your budget and your ideal itinerary.

The Atacama is a year-round destination, and whenever you go, the days are warm and the nights are cold. If you’re planning around the best time to visit Chile and San Pedro de Atacama, the May to August winter months are cooler by day and bring the clearest skies.

I went in July, when the stargazing was superb and the high lagoons were at their most colourful, but nights at altitude drop well below freezing and snow can close the highest sites for a day or two. January and February bring the altiplanic winter, with afternoon storms and cloud over the high Andes.

The Atacama Desert also makes it onto the list of the best places to go in October, which falls in spring (the shoulder season).

How long should your Desertica stay be?

Depending on how colourful and activity-filled you want your Chile itinerary to be, your stay at Desertica will hit the sweet spot when you spend at least three nights. That’s enough time to kick back, enjoy the fabulous amenities and acclimatise before you head up to the highest lagoons and geysers. My Atacama Desert itinerary shows how to fill three days.

Check-in runs from 3pm to 5:30pm, and there’s no late check-in, so let the hotel know your plans if you’re arriving on a late flight or coming back from a Bolivia tour. Check-out is at noon.

What’s a suitable dress code?

The overarching atmosphere at the hotel is cool, calm, and casual. You can’t escape the rustic feel, but it’s complemented beautifully by hints of modern sophistication.

As such, you’ll fit in well and feel most comfortable if you keep your attire relaxed and sport a smart casual look at dinner.

What’s the best way to book a stay at Hotel Desertica?

For your one-of-a-kind stay at Hotel Desertica, check rates and availability on Booking.com. Expect to pay from around US$315 to US$370 a night for two in a standard turi, more for a superior or at peak times. If you live outside Chile and pay in US dollars with a foreign card, you can usually avoid Chile’s 19% VAT, so check it has been taken off your bill.
