The Discoveries Of is written to be used. Here’s how the guides are put together, and what you can expect from them.
First-hand, always
I write about places I’ve been. Every destination guide, itinerary and review on this site comes from time on the ground: the hikes walked, the restaurants eaten in, the hotels stayed in and the routes travelled. A small number of guides are written by trusted contributors who know a destination inside out, and they’re always credited by name.
How I research
My own experience is the starting point, not the whole story. Each guide is built from my notes, photos and receipts from the trip, then checked and filled out with research: opening hours, prices, transport links and booking details, checked against official sources. Where a guide recommends somewhere I haven’t stayed, eaten or visited myself, it’s there because it’s well reviewed and checked, and I never present it as my own experience.
Independence
I decide what goes on this site. Nobody pays to be included in a guide, and nobody sees or approves my copy before it’s published.
Hosted stays and press trips
I pay for my own travel unless I say otherwise. If a hotel, tour or tourist board has hosted me, the article says so clearly. Being hosted never guarantees coverage or a positive review, and if somewhere doesn’t live up to it, I’ll tell you.
Affiliate links and advertising
Some links on this site are affiliate links. If you book or buy through them, I may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. I only link to things I’d recommend anyway, and commissions never decide what goes into a guide. The site also carries display advertising, which is managed separately from the editorial content.
Keeping guides up to date
Travel changes fast, so I regularly review the guides on this site and update them when prices, opening times or recommendations change. The date at the top of a guide only changes after a substantial update, not a small correction.
