While Paris is known for many things, the sparkly, city lights, the galleries lined with beautiful, contemporary art, and of course, the Eiffel Tower… it can be quite confusing when you are deciding where to stay in Paris. The French capital is separated into twenty arrondissements (districts), here’s a breakdown of the highlights (and lowlights) and where to stay in each one.

By Saffron Hooton

What is the Best Location to Stay in Paris

Based on the attractions, prices, and choice of hotels, our pick for the best overall location to stay in Paris would be on the right bank of the River Seine in either the first or second arrondissements. While a stay in the first arrondissement is expensive, you’re right in the centre of Paris and within walking distance of many museums, galleries, and shops including the Rue Rivoli strip. There’s also a great choice of restaurants, cafes, and bars lined along the length of the Seine – all positioned across from the famous Eiffel Tower.

Where is the Best Place to Stay in Paris?

For us it’s Hotel Bachaumont. With over fifty rooms decorated with antiques by Dorothée Meilichzon and bathrooms playing tribute to 1920’s France, this hotel boasts views of Paris rooftops worthy of its four star rating.

Positioned in the Montorgueil neighbourhood that stretches across the first and second arrondissement, Hotel Bachaumont is surrounded by restaurants, cafes, and shops alongside being close to attractions such as the Louvre. This is definitely one of the best places to stay in Paris if you’re after luxury, location, and little legwork.

Whether you prefer to be in the company of tourists or locals, visit iconic attractions or wander around hidden backstreets… what about dining in fine restaurants or eating picnics in the park. Whichever way, there is an arrondissement best suited to you.

We’ve taken the twenty districts in Paris and broken them down step by step including attractions in the area, and the best hotels to stay in that area to help you to decide which the best arrondissement to stay in Paris will be for you…

Louvre – 1st Arrondissement

1st Arrondissement Louvre Paris

Louvre, the first arrondissement, is one of the smallest and oldest neighbourhoods in the city and, in our opinion, the best location to stay in Paris…. If you have the money. Nestled beside the River Seine, the sun soaked streets of this district are almost always crowded with tourists heading towards attractions such as the Louvre and the Palais-Royal.

While everything is extremely expensive in the first arrondissement, the area is home to many restaurants, shops, and museums and can be easily navigated on foot. Many would say that this is the best arrondissement to stay in Paris, thanks to its proximity to so many of Paris’s major sights

Bourse – 2nd Arrondissement1st Arrondissement Louvre Paris

The second arrondissement in Paris also known as Bourse is mainly a business district. If you’re wondering which neighbourhood to stay in Paris and will be there for business purposes, this is probably your best choice.

Similar to the first arrondissement, the prices of hotels and restaurants in Bourse can be very expensive. Besides the cost of staying in Bourse, it’s fairly easy to find your way on foot and see some of the lesser known sights in Paris.

With many bars and restaurants, the fourth arrondissement is regarded as the centre of gay nightlife in Paris. Alongside the modern city there are many museums and both the Île de la Cité and the Île St. Louís, the two remaining islands in the Seine within Paris and the oldest parts of the capital.

While Le Marais is not as expensive as the first and second arrondissements, Marais is considered to be one of the livelier, noisier areas to stay in. It’s one of the best locations to stay in Paris if you want to explore easily but want somewhere a little more lively than the 1er and 2eme arrondissements.
