Looking for a stylish, design-led boutique stay in the heart of Mérida that won’t break the bank? Read my full review of Sercotel Casona 61.

I stayed in a lot of hotels during my time travelling around Mexico, including three in Mérida alone. Some were forgettable, a few were genuinely special, and one stood head and shoulders above the rest: Sercotel Casona 61 in Mérida. So when people ask me where to stay in the Yucatán capital, this is the place I send them first.

Here’s everything you need to know.

The Verdict Up Front

Sercotel Casona 61 is a small boutique hotel set in a restored colonial casona (townhouse) just a short walk from Mérida’s central square, Plaza Grande. What sets it apart is the uber-cool, design-led decor throughout: it looks every inch the high-end boutique hotel, yet the prices are surprisingly reasonable for what you get. If you want style, a central location and a private plunge pool for the price of a fairly ordinary mid-range room elsewhere, this is the one.

The Location

Location is one of Casona 61’s biggest strengths. It sits in the Centro Histórico, around a 10 to 15-minute walk from Plaza Grande and the Catedral de Mérida, and within easy reach of many of the city’s best bars and restaurants. That means you can spend your days exploring the historic centre on foot and wander home without needing a taxi, which is exactly what you want in a city as walkable as Mérida.

It’s far enough from the busiest tourist streets to be peaceful and quiet at night, but close enough that nothing feels like a trek. The Paseo de Montejo, with its grand mansions and restaurants, is a longer but very doable walk, or a short ride away.

The Rooms

Sercotel Casona

The rooms are where Casona 61 really shines. The design throughout is modern, considered and effortlessly stylish, the kind of place that feels expensive without trying too hard. Think clean lines, natural materials, and a calm, contemporary aesthetic that sits beautifully within the bones of the old colonial building.

My room came with its own private rooftop area and plunge pool, which (obviously) I had to make full use of more than once. After a hot day pounding the pavements of Mérida, having your own private spot to cool off in is a genuine luxury, and one you simply wouldn’t expect at this price point.

Rooms are air-conditioned (essential in Mérida’s heat), with comfortable premium bedding, safes, flat-screen TVs and good bathrooms. It’s a small property, which adds to the intimate, tucked-away feel.

Facilities

Sercotel Casona

For a small boutique hotel, Casona 61 covers the essentials well. There’s an outdoor pool alongside the private plunge pools in some rooms, an on-site café and restaurant, spa and massage services, free Wi-Fi throughout, and a 24-hour front desk, which is handy given how often flights into the Yucatán land at antisocial hours. The vibe throughout is calm, quiet and grown-up rather than party-oriented.

What It Costs

Rates vary by season and room type, but Casona 61 typically falls into the mid-range bracket, with rooms often available from around £45 to £90 ($60 to $120) per night depending on dates and the room you choose. For a stylish, design-led boutique hotel with a central location and, in some rooms, a private plunge pool, that represents genuinely excellent value. As ever, rates climb during the December-to-April high season, so book ahead if you’re visiting then.

Who It’s Best For

Casona 61 is ideal for couples and design-minded travellers who want something stylish and central without paying luxury-hotel prices. It’s perfect for a relaxed city base, particularly if you snag one of the rooms with a private plunge pool. If you’re after a big resort with extensive facilities, kids’ clubs or beachfront, this isn’t that, and nor is it trying to be. But for a chic, peaceful, well-located bolthole in one of Mexico’s most charming cities, I haven’t stayed anywhere better.

Is Sercotel Casona 61 Worth It?

In a word, yes. Of all the places I stayed across five weeks in Mexico, this is the one I think about most, and the one I’d return to in a heartbeat. The combination of design, location, that private plunge pool and the very reasonable price makes it, for my money, the best boutique hotel in Mérida.
