Phoenix is a real highlight of any Arizona trip  – this totally laid back city is the perfect base for a southern adventure.

I stayed at some wonderful resorts – along with one or two I’d like to quickly forget – but overall, the hotels in Arizona (and specifically Phoenix) are outstanding.

But choosing from all the great hotels in PHX requires planning. Luckily, I’ve taken care of that for you and found the most incredible luxury resorts, affordable gems and quirky boutique hotels Phoenix offers.

Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort

£££

Camelback East

Arizona Biltmore A Waldorf Astoria Resort

Located in East Phoenix, away from downtown, the Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort is an opulent hangout for celebrities, golfers and us regular folk that love to splurge.

And why wouldn’t it be? When you stay a few nights in one of the villas, cottages, suites or guest rooms, you’ll quickly fall under the spell of upscale leisure in the desert.

Even the most basic rooms have elegant touches like marble countertops in the spacious bathrooms and stylish decor mixing light shades of brown evoking imagery of the desert sands nearby.

The iconic resort is an architectural marvel inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright. Architect Albert Chase McArthur actually paid Wright $10,000 (roughly £8,000) for a design patent that – turns out, he didn’t own.

The interesting history and attention to every opulent detail set the stage for a luxury stay like no other in Phoenix. Two 18-hole golf courses, the award-winning Tierra Luna Spa, an adults-only outdoor swimming pool and views of the nearby mountains are all signatures of my top pick for the best hotels in Phoenix.

If you only eat at one restaurant here, make it Renata’s Hearth and try the expertly prepared brisket with fresh tortillas and chipotle cashew salsa. Thank me later.

The Hermosa Inn

£££

Paradise Valley

The Hermosa Inn

Looking for a relaxed getaway in the quieter suburbs of Phoenix? Walking up to the perfectly manicured gardens at the historical property, you’ll immediately see why The Hermosa Inn is one of my favourite hotels in Phoenix, AZ.

The property once belonged to famous local painter, Lon Megargee, and you can see how the landscape can inspire any artist with the beautiful desert and mountain setting all around.

Rooms boast southwestern cabin decor with hardwood from floor to ceiling, a built-in brick fireplace, and oversized leather chairs. And, when hunger strikes, head to the popular Lon’s or Lon’s Last Drop, where you’ll enjoy carefully sourced local food and beverage options in unpretentious spaces that are warm and inviting.

You’ll need to drive to whatever plans you may have, but you might want to cancel them once you dive into the laid-back ranch-inspired setting at The Hermosa Inn.

Depending on where you’re flying in from, you might get off the plane and want the closest possible hotel. So, if you’re looking for Phoenix airport hotels, the DoubleTree Suites by Hilton Phoenix is a surprisingly comfortable option with plenty of outdoor space to enjoy.

Opt for a King Suite and you’ll enjoy a spacious apartment-style suite with a refrigerator, kitchen sink, and large living room that opens up to a courtyard view.

RISE Uptown

RISE Uptown is quickly becoming one of the most popular boutique hotels in Phoenix. And I’m not surprised one bit.

The locally owned gem features stylish design touches from top to bottom. A cheery, bright ambiance takes centre stage in both of the dazzling cocktail lounges (one of which is on the rooftop).

Head to the pool, and the fun continues at the MCM hotspot Lylo Swim Club – get there early, snag a spot poolside and relax to local DJs setting the tone for the afternoon.

After you’ve soaked up some winter sunshine (or whatever season you happen to go), enjoy your stylish room with king-size beds, MCM furniture, and colourful cactus wallpaper reminding you exactly where you are.

Downtown Phoenix

Hyatt Regency Phoenix

You’re probably getting the picture that luxury Phoenix hotels are not only all over the city, but they’re often available at surprisingly low prices. Hyatt Regency Phoenix is a great example of a cosmopolitan oasis at a very reasonable cost.

Choose one of the nearly 700 recently remodelled rooms or suites, and you’ll find contemporary decor with hardwood furniture and floors, ample workspace, and large beds where you can wake up to the Phoenix skyline outside.

Head downstairs, and dining options include the casual Barrel and Bushel, where you can enjoy a snack and craft beer or a high-end meal at The Compass, where you’ll enjoy panoramic views of downtown Phoenix from the top of the hotel.

Midtown Arts District

Found Re Phoenix

The art scene in Phoenix has been on fire lately, and the Found:Re Phoenix hotel leans into that theme with great results. Even if you don’t fancy yourself artsy, you’ll get into it quickly.

You’ll find artwork from local painters, sculptors and designers throughout the building, with many eye-catching pieces in the lobby, rooms and hallways. Time your trip just right (or get lucky), and you may share the hotel with some of the most exciting artistic events in town.

Match Market and Bar plays off the food hall concept and offers locally made items for your kitchen or living room alongside a restaurant serving a mix of international cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix

££

Garfield

Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix Cityscape

Looking to be steps away from downtown Phoenix’s vibrant dining and nightlife? Kimpton Hotel Palomar Phoenix is in CityScape – giving you a chance to check out exciting restaurants like Chico Malo (go for brunch, get the birria and vibe out during the DJ sets).

But there’s plenty to celebrate about the hotel itself apart from the perfect location. The rooftop pool and lounge are off the hook.

Rooms are spacious and stylish, with eclectic artwork and modern furniture breathing new life into one of the best Phoenix hotels downtown.

Book your room in advance, especially during peak season, as the secret is out with this fashionable Arizona hotel.

The rooms are small and pretty basic but offer comfortable beds, flat-screen TVs, and, most importantly, are well-maintained.

A partially-enclosed outdoor pool with a hot tub, a southwestern grill indoors, and a lively sports bar on-site are a few of the perks of staying in this budget-friendly hotel. It’s also a short drive from Chase Field and some of my other favourite locations in town.
