My H Hotel El Nido review: a stylish, vegan-friendly hotel in the middle of town, with a fully plant-based breakfast, mountain-view rooms and one of the best rooftop bars in El Nido for sunset.

H Hotel El Nido is a boutique hotel on Real Street in the middle of El Nido town, a few steps from the main beach. It’s a vegan-friendly hotel, with a fully plant-based breakfast, and its rooftop bar, Piece of Sky, looks straight out over the bay to the islands.

I stayed here for two nights at the end of May, between my two island-hopping tours and a three-day boat trip to Coron. I’d started my stay in a hostel outside town and moved here because I wanted to be able to walk to dinner and bars, and because I wanted some space before two nights in basic beach camps. It turned out to be the best decision I made in El Nido.

Quick verdict

H Hotel El Nido is a great choice if you want a comfortable, stylish base in the middle of town, with the beach, the tour meeting points and the restaurants all on your doorstep. It’s especially good for vegans and vegetarians, and for anyone who wants their sunset with a cocktail and a view rather than in a crowd on the beach.

My stay at H Hotel El Nido

Checking in

I checked in after a day on Tour A. There was a welcome drink and some lovely Filipino snacks, and the staff told me a saxophonist was playing on the rooftop that evening.

The room

My room was a mountain-view room, stylish, modern and properly spacious. After a hostel room so small I couldn’t move once my bag was inside, it felt like luxury. It looked out over the green hills behind town, a lovely reminder that El Nido isn’t just about the sea.

Room types include doubles, suites and family rooms, and some have balconies. Check-in is from 2pm and check-out is by noon.

Breakfast

H Hotel’s restaurant, Ver De, is vegan-friendly, and breakfast is entirely plant-based. I went for a burrito filled with tofu scramble, black beans and cashew ricotta, with a coffee, before a day of kayaking and snorkelling on Tour C. Breakfast was included in my rate.

The rooftop bar

Piece of Sky, the rooftop bar, is the reason I’d book H Hotel again. It has views across the main beach and the bay, with the islands silhouetted against the sunset. On my first evening I headed up with my welcome drink and caught the tail end of the sunset, with a saxophonist playing smooth jazz.

On my second evening I made sure I was up there in time. Some people I’d met were heading to a bar with cheap drinks, but I wanted drinks with a view, and as the sky turned orange and the sax player launched into Anita Baker, I knew I’d made the right call.

The location

The hotel is in the centre of town, just off the main beach, so everything is walkable. That was the whole point for me. I could stroll to the tour meeting point at Jarace Grill in the morning, wander out for dinner in the evening and walk back without needing a tricycle, and I could drop off and pick up my laundry before my boat trip to Coron.

What I loved

  • The rooftop bar at sunset. One of the best views in town, with cocktails and live music.
  • The plant-based breakfast. Something different from the usual breakfast spread, with dishes like a tofu scramble burrito.
  • The space. A spacious, stylish room after the cramped hostel I’d started in.
  • The location. In town, a few steps from the beach and walking distance from everything.
  • The welcome. A welcome drink, Filipino snacks and staff who made sure I knew about the music upstairs.

Things to know

  • Breakfast is fully plant-based. If you can’t face a morning without bacon and eggs, it may not suit you, but it’s worth trying.
  • You’re in town, not on a quiet beach. El Nido town is busy and lively. If you want a secluded resort, you’ll need to look further out to places like Lio or Nacpan.
  • Get to the rooftop early. The sun drops quickly, and on my first night I only caught the end.

Practical information
