Camping in Santa Fe? Read this guide to the top sites and tips you need to know.

Santa Fe is one of my favourite places in the USA – a spectacular fusion of history, culture, art and cuisine. It offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in Native American culture, thriving art markets and some of the most mouthwatering regional delicacies.

And there’s no better way to immerse yourself in all this than by camping out in Santa Fe’s backcountry beauty.

Not sure where to start? These are the top campsites in Santa Fe.

It’s no secret that Santa Fe’s semi-arid climate and pleasant sunny weather make it the perfect destination for fun outdoor activities. So why not head off on a memorable camping adventure?

At Santa Fe Skies RV Park, situated on a hill, you’ll enjoy stunning regional views of Rio Grande Valley while embarking on an all-inclusive camping experience. With easy access to electric services, water and propane, you’ll be able to enjoy a comfortable stay at one of the best Santa Fe RV camping sites.

One of this pet-friendly park’s major highlights is the Turquoise Trail, from which you can snap Insta-worthy pictures with gorgeous natural backdrops. Just remember to keep your doggo on a leash and clean up after your pet.

They say it isn’t a true New Mexican escape if you don’t visit Santa Fe National Forest – so why not camp there? Luckily, Jack’s Creek Campground offers some of the best camping in the area.

For high-altitude lovers, this is for you; Jack’s Creek is in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. It’s an ideal base for adventure seekers exploring the Pecos Wilderness, as you can enjoy scenic walks and hiking trails that are both fun and challenging.

Even without hookups or a dump station, this site provides a beautiful retreat in a tranquil landscape. And there are no reservations needed; it’s first-come, first-serve.

But the best part of Jack’s Creek is its rate, which is an absolute steal at $10 per site per night.

Top tip: There’s no drinkable water, so be sure to bring a sufficient supply of your own (bottled).

Rancheros De Santa Fe Campground

Outskirts of town

  • Open dates: March – November
  • Number of sites: 100
  • Types of camping available: Trailers, tents, vans, RVs

The best place for camping near Santa Fe is Rancheros De Santa Fe Campground, which sits on the famous Route 66. Boasting scenic views and comfortable, spacious campsites, it’s the ideal place for country camping.

Junipers and piñon pines cover the campground, providing a rustic natural setting where you can relax, rejuvenate and reset with the attractions of Santa Fe at your fingertips.

If you don’t fancy completely roughing it, there are cabins available. And, better yet, your doggo can run freely at the enclosed dog park and enjoy its best four-legged life.

As of 1st May 2023, rates start at $40 for tents and vans.

Top tip: Don’t miss the nearby Meow Wolf’s House of Eternal Return. Here, you’ll experience the wackiest immersive art installation in the region. It’ll blow your mind.

Practical Tips for Booking Campsites in Santa Fe

  • Be sure to check if your chosen campground offers discounts for Good Sam cardholders, senior citizens, military veterans, and other special groups. Who doesn’t enjoy a little discount, right?
  • Not all campsites are well-equipped. So it’s best to be safe and carry enough of your own drinkable food and water.
  • Trust me on this one – you need to bring plenty of suncream, a hat, sunglasses and comfortable walking sandals.
