Let’s face it. The Maldives is Asia’s version of paradise.
Who doesn’t dream of escaping to a luxury hotel in the Maldives?
You know the old saying, you haven’t seen a beach until you’ve seen a beach in the Maldives. OK, maybe I just made that up but if it’s not a saying already, it should be.
When I talk about the Maldives as the definition of luxury, I’m not exaggerating. Think exclusivity, butler service and top class treatment. It’s a shame that for many – that’s where the Maldives end.
Don’t worry, if $5,000 a night hotels are a little out of your budget (or a million miles away from your budget) there are plenty of other choices that won’t break the bank.
Dazzled by what you see on land? Wait till you experience what’s in the sea.
Vibrant and glittering coral, mysterious caves and the colourful glimmer of tropical fish scattered throughout the water. Here are some of the best places to experience in the Maldives.
The Best Places to Travel in The Maldives
The capital of the Maldives contrasts with the serene island atmosphere that gives the Maldives its characteristic charm.
The buzz and hum of scooters and cars ring through the air as you walk shoulder to shoulder in built up crowds of travellers and locals. It’s not necessarily busy, but it’s so tiny that it gets pretty crammed.
There aren’t too many sights to see in Male but you can experience the Maldivian life by visiting an alcohol free cafe or restaurant or heading to the busy market.
Maafushi isn’t considered the most luxurious island but that doesn’t detract from its character.
Maafushi is the ideal spot for budget travellers as there are local guest houses open for travellers to stay in.
It’s pretty relaxed – there’s nothing like sipping a cocktail whilst bobbing along on a floating bar and sunbathing in your own slice of tropical island paradise.
Cross the water and you’ll find Villingili, a much more relaxed escape from the busier, built up islands.
There is an essence of a relaxed, Caribbean attitude here as the island stools along at a calm pace. It a great place to have a swim, play some football, go shopping or hand out in a nice restaurant.
The beautiful Utheemu was once the home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who drove out Portuguese invaders in the 16th century. Expect to find typical Maldives views, dustings of white sand lapped by the bluer than blue ocean.
