The Best Places to See Amazing Sunsets

November 10, 2016
Sunset from Los Angeles Observatory

There’s nothing like a sunset to bring out the sheer beauty of a place. No-one forgets the moments the sky is enriched in a range of fiery golden hues, or the subtle blues and purples of a fast-approaching night. Here are the best places to catch some amazing sunsets.

Julianna Barnaby

Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica

Amazing sunsets in the Gulf of Nicoya Costa Rica

The Gulf of Nicoya is the location for some stunning sunsets in Costa Rica. The Gulf separates the peninsula of Nicoya from Costa Rica’s mainland. It’s an area of mangroves and incredible landscapes, paired with the diverse wildlife that Costa Rica is famous for.  At sunset, watch as the light perfectly frames the hills of the peninsula- it makes for a pretty striking sight.

Koh Lanta, Thailand

Beautiful sunset in Koh Lanta, Thailand

Koh Lanta might not be Thailand’s most famous island (it’s actually a group of islands) but it’s certainly home to some of Thailand’s most amazing beaches. On Koh Lanta Yai, savour the views out to Koh Phi Phi (the island made famous by The Beach) and enjoy a sundowner as the sun makes a gracious retreat below the horizon.

Kiwenga, Zanzibar

Incredible sunset with Palm Tree in Zanzibar

Zanzibar – the name alone sounds exotic. This island off the coast of Tanzania is a beach-lover’s paradise and the sunsets are something to behold. Kiwenga’s beaches are exactly as you’d imagine them – pale, fine sand and azure blue waters and the sunsets are not to be missed.

Caye Caulker, Belize

Amazing sunset in Caye Caulker, Belize

Caye Caulker is the ultimate place to go and chill, while maybe doing a bit of diving in one of Belize’s awesome dive spots or eating some of the local speciality – barbecued lobster. This Caribbean island is something of a pro when it comes to amazing sunsets. Watch the sun light up the water as far as the eye can see and know that the pictures will never do it justice.

Gilli Islands, Indonesia

Sunset from Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Whichever of the Gilli islands you choose as your island paradise (there are three, Trawangan, Air and Meno), the one thing that you will be guaranteed is a striking sunset. The Gilli islands boast a number of picture-perfect beaches. If you’re on Trawangan, the best spot to watch the sunset is Western beach (surprise!) – don’t forget your camera.

Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Beautiful sunset in Sihanoukville, Cambodia

Cambodia is less well-known for its beaches than its neighbour, Thailand, but there are some great beach spots for you to find, if you know where to look. Sihanoukville is not the prettiest of towns but the beach here is pretty spectacular and so are the sunsets. Grab a seat in one of the beachside bars and watch as nature puts on its finest show.

Los Angeles, USA

Sunset from Los Angeles Observatory

The rest of the locations have been beachside ones, but sunset over a city can be equally beautiful. The Observatory in Los Angeles is a great location to snap the sun setting over the City of Angels. The hardier of you can hike up to viewpoint but it’s a short drive up if that seems too much like effort.

There it is, our list of amazing sunsets. Do you have any more to add to the list? We’d love to hear them in the comments section.

Eric I’m so glad to hear that you liked the post and found some faves – those two might be my picks too, though the sunset on the Gulf de Nicoya was still the most amazing I’ve ever seen 👌

Cambodia is one of my favorite countries in the world. I absolutely loved it there and am so happy to see that you’ve included it on your list. They really need the economic boost from tourism.

I was amazed by the sunset picture from Belize. I would not have dreamed of having babecued lobster on the oceanfront with wine, and watch the setting sun on the ocean in a predawn evening. It is just my dream vacation. Thanks for sharing all your lovely sunset locations.

Thank you for your lovely words. If you do get a chance to go to Belize, I’d very much recommend it. Caye Caulker has a special place in my heart.

It´s hard to decide which one is the best, but I guess I want to check out the one in Zanzibar in person.
