Red alert. It’s that time of the year folks. You know, when we crack out the mulled wine, tuck into the mince pies and start our transformation into our very best festive selves.

Visiting a good Christmas market is an integral part of this process – luckily London just so happens to be packed with Christmassy things to do.

I have to admit that I’ve been a little late getting into the Christmas spirit this year – but in the last week I’ve been running around London, chasing down that Christmas vibe with a single-mindedness that even I have to admit is a little bit terrifying. The result? Feeling festive AF now. Yo ho ho ho!

Time for you to do the same? Here are the best Christmas markets in London for your festive calendar.

Winter Wonderland

Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park is such a fixture on the London festive calendar that it’s pretty much a given that you will go at some point during December (or November if you are feeling really keen).

Winter Wonderland is a fun night out anyway, but we’re here for the good stuff. Winter Wonderland has not one but two of the best Christmas markets in London.

The Bavarian-style Christmas market has over 200 stalls selling all kinds of festive goodies, while the Angel Market is packed with cute handmade decorations and thoughtful gifts.

It’s only fair to warn you that it’s pretty much impossible to visit and not come out laden down with a shopping bag or two.

Winter Market at Southbank Centre

I love the Southbank Centre and its surrounds – there’s always something exciting going on and winter is no exception. It should be at the top of your list of winter destinations in London.

The Southbank Centre’s Winter Market is part of its Winter Festival, which runs from early November to the 6th January.

What can you expect? How does an array of wooden chalets, jauntily placed in an oh-so-London setting beside the Thames selling all kinds of unique finds.

Now, shopping is nice, but throw in words like fondue, stroop waffles and Christmassy cocktails and this all starts to sound pretty much like perfection. It is.

Borough Market

Sure, Borough Market is a year-round affair but they totally ramp up the pace at Christmas. The already beautiful setting of the market is decked out with Christmas lights and decorations – it’s just gorgeous.

Food is the name of the game here (well, food and drink – even better), so I’d advise that you go with a hungry stomach, ready to fill it with delicious treats (and if you’re anything like me, cup after cup of mulled wine to boot).

In charge of the festive table this year? The market is the perfect place to stock up on high-quality ingredients for your Christmas feast too.

Winterville Clapham Common

There are tonnes of Christmas markets in central London but if you’re something a little less touristy and a little more local, Clapham Common’s Winterville is a good place to start.

Like most winter theme parks, there’s a lot more to Winterville than its Christmas market (the Solo Craft Fair in the Idolise Spiegeltent every weekend between 12-5pm) but the market isn’t your bog-standard gathering of commercial outfits.

The craft fair sees some of the capital’s most talented designer makers rock up to sell their range of unique jewellery, ceramics, clothing and more – in other words – the kind of things that make for the perfect Christmas gifts to put under the tree.

Leicester Square Christmas Market

I normally kind of loathe Leicester Square – but totally make an exception at Christmas because a) it’s the season for giving and all that plus b) they put on a banging show of Christmas cheer that warms even my cold, dead heart inside.

It helps that Leicester Square’s Christmas offering  organised and hosted by Udderbelly, who put together a rollicking range of events that are a million miles away from the bog standard tourist bait cheesiness on offer other destinations.

The market at Christmas at Leicester Square might be small, but it packs a punch. Trinkets, tinsel and tat of the best possible kind – plus there’s a Santa’s Grotto for those of you that have been extra-good this year.

Somerset House

Somerset House is another winning destination for getting all the Christmassy feels in London.

To be honest, Christmas at Somerset House is mostly about the spectacular ice-rink… but you should also pop into Fortnum’s Christmas Arcade – a.k.a the perfect Christmas shopping destination for the high-class divas in your life.

You can never have too much food or too many goodies from Fortnums at Christmas.

Greenwich Christmas Market

Another year-round market that takes a decidedly festive turn in December, Greenwich Christmas Market turns the world heritage in the quirky neighbourhood of Greenwich listed building into a Christmas treasure trove.

With more than 150 stalls touting pretty much every kind of Christmas gift imaginable it’s the perfect place to pick up a few stocking fillers or that extra-special gift or two. Want to avoid the weekend crowds? The Wednesday night lates (each Wednesday up to the 19th) are a much more laid-back and peaceful affair.

Kingston Christmas Market

Each year, the sleepy surburban outpost of Kingston Upon Thames rouses itself to host one London’s cutest Christmas markets.

The market’s cute alpine village hosts over 50 stalls – and there are two bars doling out the requisite mulled wine and lots of yummy German winter warmers to help the process too.

Christmas by the River, London Bridge

The twinkling fairy lights, wooden cabins and general feeling of festive cheer draw punters to London’s fabulous Christmas by the River.

This is hands down one of the best Christmas markets in London when it comes to location. Nestled near Tower Bridge, the Scoop and with a view of the Tower of London, it’s the perfect London backdrop to glug down the gluhwein and get into the festive season groove.

Camden Market’s Christmas Takeover

The Yuletide spirit arrives with aplomb each year at Camden Market’s cheery Christmas Takeover. Embracing Xmas with attitude, this London Christmas market opens up a world of craft workshops, carol singing and a flurry of (totally fake but no less atmospheric) snow every hour down by the lock.

The market stalls feature a collection of independent traders selling cool one-of-a-kind finds.

There’s food and drink galore of course, but you really shouldn’t miss Chin Chin Labs ridiculously delicious (and Instagrammable) hot chocolates which come topped with mounds of melted marshmallow.

Christmas Wednesdays on Columbia Road

I’ve always been a big fan of Columbia Road – visiting the Sunday flower market is one of the best things to do in Shoreditch at any time of year but it’s Christmas and that means one thing. Christmas Wednesdays.

Not a Christmas Market per se, Christmas Wednesdays sees all of the cool indie shops dotted along Columbia Road (there are over 60 of them) stay open until 9pm each Wednesday in December.

Accompanied by carol singing, mulled wine and stalls selling Christmas trees – it’s a great place to see a different side of London’s Christmas spirit.

Christmas Canopy Market at King’s Cross

Quick, the Christmas Canopy Market only runs until the 16th December. If you’re looking for a spot to mooch around, browsing items made by some of London’s best independent designers and makers – this is your jam.

From speciality handmade chocolate bars to vinyl LPs, handmade jewellery and cool art: it’s a collection of some of the coolest Christmas gifts you will find in the capital. Deck the halls!
